In October 0f 2004 Joel Turner was about to turn 18.
He was known as the beatboxer discovered in the audition line for the first Australian Idol in 2003. No-one even knew he was a singer let alone a hit writer producer guitar player but that was about to change when These Kids was released in October of 2004 on Idol judge Mark Holden’s independent label Dream Dealers distributed by MGM.
It entered the Aria charts at #5 then went straight to #1 on the Aria Singles Chart and stayed there for 7 weeks going double platinum.
He wrote the song with his brother Tim Turner aka DubLT of the Modern Day Poets who delivered a blistering rap in 2004 and spoke for a generation.
Flash forward to 2024 and These Kids 20th Anniversary Remix retools the groove with a brilliant remix by Kiwi DJ Jonathan Schnell and DubLT spits out a new rap:
gotta try something new
cos it's been 20 years and it's clear
there’s been hardly any progress.”
With a backdrop of the youth crime crisis dominating the national news cycle These Kids 20th Anniversary Remix is once again right on time.
they grew up with a virus,
with a cost of living crisis the housing supply is
the opposite of ample
keep putting up the rent, put a tent in the brambles
power bills are a scandal
inflation and rates and our savings are landfill
Seems like we are led by some damn fools
